My Philosophy and Approach
Therapy is more than just talking. You need something that really helps.
Hello! I’m Dr. Ryan Walsh. As a clinical psychologist in St. Louis, I work with adults dealing with anxiety, trauma or PTSD, depression, and burnout or other life stress.
My Values and Philosophy:
It's difficult to truly describe the power that therapy can have for clients, but in short, I believe that the right kind of therapy has the potential to be life changing. Clients can break out of patterns they've been stuck in, and start to grow and thrive in ways they hadn't imagined. Ultimately that growth and positive change is at the heart of this work, and it is why this matters so much. Therapy can help you understand and be kind to yourself, build skills to navigate the challenges you face, and feel more confident in your day-to-day life. I believe in your worth and value. I believe your experiences matter. I believe you deserve respect, and I believe that even the strongest people need support at times. I believe you have the capacity to grow, create meaningful change, and become the best version of yourself.
My Methods and Approach:
Many people come to therapy worried that it will feel overly clinical, formal, or sterile. My clients tend to tell me instead that our conversations feel natural and inviting, while still having a meaningful focus.
I believe that therapy should feel like a real conversation with someone who is invested in your success. I have tools I will give you, but I also want to ensure that you feel heard because that is an important part of this too. I want clients to feel free to discuss what is on their mind. Therapy isn't about editing yourself. I try to be approachable, practical, and grounded with you, while also giving you skills and tools to create meaningful change.
I'm drawn to evidence-based therapy methods including Cognitive-Behavioral Therapy and Mindfulness Skills as these approaches help people to notice and understand what is happening both inside and around them, while also building practical tools that support meaningful change.
Of course one part of our work is helping you to understand yourself and your experiences -- but therapy is incomplete if it stops there. The other piece is to help you build a life that feels manageable, adaptable, and in-line with what you care about.
You can read more about my methods and clinical approach on my Services page.
Lets get started:
I have never heard a client say they regretted starting therapy, but I often hear “I wish I'd done this sooner.”
