"Healing doesn't mean the pain never existed.
It means the damage no longer controls our lives."

TRAUMA-FOCUSED AND
TRAUMA-INFORMED THERAPY
For: PTSD, childhood abuse, adult trauma, emotional neglect, nervous system dysregulation.
All trauma can be impactful. Whether you experienced trauma as a child or as an adult, and whether you have experienced one or numerous traumatic events in your life, experiencing trauma can erode some of the core elements of who we are. You may feel untrusting of others or even yourself. You may struggle with feeling safe – in public, but sometimes even in your own home. You might find yourself trying to control everything, then feeling helpless at times. You may notice yourself coping in ways that aren’t really helping you to recover. You might find yourself irritable or on edge, and shrinking the amount of relationships or activities in your life to help yourself feel more calm and in control. Relationships, work, and other areas of life can be affected, and it may even start to feel like trauma has changed who you are. It is not your fault, and it doesn’t have to stay this way.
There are effective and impactful therapies to address trauma and to help you recover. Trauma-informed care can be integrated into the other work you do in therapy, and often it can be beneficial to addressed trauma directly and on it’s own. There is no requirement in therapy to talk about trauma if you prefer not to. However, if this was an area you felt you needed to address, and if you felt ready to do so, you would have the opportunity to talk with me about what you had been through, and how those experiences have impacted your life (both now and in the past). We would discuss what you have tried in order to cope -- what has worked, and what has not worked. From there, we would work to build the skills you need to process what you have been through, develop a strong understanding of the impact of trauma, and build skills to reduce your struggles and get you back to feeling like yourself again.
I practice trauma-informed care with all clients. For those who need a closer focus in this area, I offer both Cognitive Processing Therapy and Cognitive Behavioral Therapy for PTSD and trauma in St. Louis. You may be coming to therapy at least in part because day-to-day life is getting difficult. It's important for you to get some tools and skills to help you see some early relief or improvements. Those skills can help while we do some of the deeper work to address the ongoing impacts that trauma has had on you.
