Finding time to recharge and deepen your connection with yourself, others, and the world is a vital part of mental health and emotional wellness. However, while many of us are aware of the benefits, it is also common to encounter barriers, whether it's the challenge of finding time, or just difficulty generating interesting ideas. This post is intended to offer support and ideas for people looking for ways to revitalize themselves a bit, unwind, reconnect, or just feel more grounded.

Over my 20 years living in the St. Louis area, I've found that whether you seek quiet moments in nature, creative outlets, or community engagement, this city and region has something to offer everyone. St. Louis and the broader Missouri area offer a variety of rewarding activities designed to help you relax, reflect, and find time to reconnect with yourself and others.

Explore Nature to Recharge Your Mind and Body

Spending time outdoors is one of the most effective ways to ground yourself and reconnect with the world. Missouri has a lot of diverse opportunities for physical activity and connection with nature.

  • Forest Park in St Louis

We are fortunate in St. Louis to have such a wonderful park available in our own backyard! Forest Park is over 1,300 acres and includes walking trails, lakes, and gardens. You can stroll along the paths, rent a paddleboat, or simply find a quiet bench to enjoy the surroundings. The park is home to the St Louis Art Museum, The St. Louis Zoo, The Missouri History Museum, and various other local institutions. You can learn more about events in and around Forest Park at this link.

  • Missouri Botanical Garden

The Missouri Botanical Garden shows off a stunning environment of natural beauty and plant life. The Japanese Garden section is a common favorite, with various thoughtfully arranged plants, water features, and stone lanterns. The Missouri Botanical Garden regularly holds events throughout the year, for those interested. You can learn more about their schedule of events at this link. The Japanese Festival is coming up this Labor Day weekend (September 5th through 7th 2026).

  • Hiking or Scenic Drives in the Ozarks

For a more immersive nature experience, Missourians (or our wonderful visitors) can also head to the Ozark Mountains. Trails like the Ozark Trail or Johnson’s Shut-Ins State Park provide scenic views and the chance to disconnect from daily stress. If you prefer driving options, consider some of these scenic drives.

  • Kayaking on the Missouri River

Paddling along the river offers both exercise and a chance to connect with nature. Several outfitters in Missouri rent kayaks and provide guided tours.

Engage in Creative Endeavors

Creative activities can also be powerful tool for enjoyment and self-expression. St Louis and Missouri offer many ways to tap into your artistic (and even performance) side.

  • Art Classes and Workshops

Local organizations such as the Contemporary Art Museum offer public programs around various topics and forms of art. A quick google search will show you that various locations and organizations offer classes and workshops for a wide range of creative interests such as woodworking (such as those through Woodcraft), pottery (offered through the South Broadway Art Project), painting (Pinot's Palette offers various classes including those "Paint and Sip" classes all over social media), and so on (Craft Alliance offers classes for a wide and diverse range of interests).

  • Writing Groups and Poetry Readings

Joining a writing circle or attending poetry slams can help you explore your thoughts and feelings through words. The Saint Louis Poetry Center hosts regular events, as do local libraries (on the St. Louis Public Library event page, under "Event Type" click "Writer's Group" or other areas of interest).

  • Music and other Performance Arts

Participating in community music groups or classes can boost your mood and support positive creative outlets. Places like the STL Rock School offer beginner-friendly sessions in various instruments and styles. If you want to hone skills around Improv Comedy, St. Louis also has organizations like The Improv Shop that offer classes around these interests.

Connect with Others Through Community and Volunteer Work

Building connections with others is essential for emotional and overall well-being. Missouri’s communities offer many ways to engage with causes and organizations that match your values.

  • Volunteering at Local Organizations

Giving your time to causes you care about can create a strong sense of purpose. This could include an organizations like Seed STL (formerly Gateway Greening), which focuses on urban gardening projects. Animal rescue agencies and organizations are also commonly looking for volunteers at various levels of involvement (see the St Louis County Pet Shelter, Stray Rescue, or other organizations). If there is a cause that is important to you, there are likely options for volunteering available in the St. Louis community (you can check out the United Way Volunteer Center and choose your area of interest for more ideas).

  • Community Festivals and Markets

Events and gatherings such as local farmer's markets (see this recent guide) or the Missouri State Fair provide opportunities to meet others in your neighborhood, enjoy regional foods, and experience local traditions.

  • Group Fitness and Wellness Classes

Joining group activities like Tai Chi, meditation sessions, or exercise classes/groups can help you meet people with similar interests. Many community centers in St. Louis offer affordable classes designed to promote both physical and emotional health, and a local community center may be closer than you think.

Find Quiet Spaces for Reflection and Mindfulness

Sometimes, the best way to recharge is by stepping away from noise and distractions. Missouri offers several quiet spots perfect for meditation and introspection.

  • Libraries and Bookstores

Spending time in a calm environment surrounded by books can be restorative. The Central Library in St. Louis has quiet reading rooms, hosts book clubs, and even offers tours. If you want to start your own book club, the local libraries offer an easy way to do so with their Book Club in a Bag program.

  • Quiet Cafés and Tea Houses

Finding a cozy café with a calm atmosphere can be a simple way to enjoy solitude or or a connected conversation with a loved one. There are many locally owned and run coffee houses that can offer a grounding experience. Consider this guide for some local recommendations.

Whatever You Do, Be Present

If you do decide to engage in some of these activities or ideas, I encourage you to challenge yourself to be fully present. Set a personal goal or intention; for this time, your focus is on this activity, and whoever you are doing it with (whether that is yourself, an important person in your life, or a pet). As with all attempts to be present, your mind may offer you distractions or other things to think about, but you can still ground yourself in these activities, and truly absorb those experiences. Mindfulness can help ground us, and allow us to appreciate elements of life that we otherwise may have missed.
